GMChorale

Mass for the Homeless

Beatitude Mass by Henry Mollicone and a selection of works by Beethoven, Bach, Brahms and Vaughan Williams; Conductor: Joseph D'Eugenio, Artistic Director; Accompanist: Allan Conway

On Saturday, May 3, at 7 p.m., the Greater Middletown Chorale will present the Connecticut Premiere of Henry Mollicone’s The Beatitude Mass / Mass for the Homeless with Soloists: Sheri Hammerstrom, Soprano and TBD, Baritone at the Performing Arts Center at Middletown High School, 200 La Rosa Lane.

Mollicone’s choral work, composed in 2006, will be presented in partnership with and recognition of the Middletown missions of St. Vincent de Paul and the Amazing Grace Food Pantry.

The Mass is a moving, beautiful work that juxtaposes the traditional language of the Latin Mass with English texts taken from interviews with people living in homeless shelters. According to a reviewer, “…the Beatitude Mass draws on his exceptional musical gifts of melody and harmony to exalt the simple, anguished words of homeless people into haunting and moving expressions.”

This concert will be part of an inspiring series of events to raise awareness and give voice to an issue important to the entire community. In addition to the GMC performance, May 3rd will feature a pre-concert lecture by composer Henry Mollicone and a gallery showing of Saint Vincent de Paul Middletown patron portraits by Abby Carter. The weekend will culminate with The Walk Against Hunger on Sunday, May 4th in Hartford.

Fairfield County Children's Choir, Jon Noyes, Music Director and Founder, will present its spring concert, "Singing America: A Celebration of the Great American Songbook" on Saturday, May 10 at 7pm at Fairfield Warde High School Auditorium in Fairfield, Ct.

With their program the 300 young choristers will demonstrate and celebrate the positive power of this body of uniquely American songs. The composers who gave rise to what has become known as the Great American Songbook translated positive values and an optimistic spirit into the soundtrack of American life. Their songs offered hope of better days during the Great Depression, built morale during two world wars, and helped build social bridges within our culture.

Familiar tunesmiths as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, and Richard Rodgers will be featured.

Founded in 1995, the FCCC provides children the opportunity to experience music making of the highest caliber. The group has performed to critical acclaim throughout the United States including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as in Canada and Europe.

Tickets are $15 and $20 and will be available at the door or by calling 203-414-4292, www.SingFCCC.org

Fairfield County Chorale

Poulenc & Rossini

Poulenc & Rossini
Presented by The Fairfield County Chorale and The Westchester Choral Society
on May 10th 2014 at 7:30 pm

On Saturday, May 10th 2014 at 7:30 pm at Norwalk Concert Hall, the 110 voices of The Fairfield County Chorale, the area’s pre-eminent choral group, and the 50 voices of The Westchester County Choral Society will present
Poulenc Gloria and Rossini Stabat Mater
The frothy Gloria is tuneful throughout with mysticism, exciting rhythms and ecstatic chords. The Stabat Mater is Rossini, who also composed the William Tell Opera, at his melodious best from the exquisite “a cappella” movement to the glorious final fugue that exemplifies Rossini’s supremacy at beautiful melodies. The Gloria, is a relatively modern work, commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation, was premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1961. With his great affinity for the human voice and his magnificent penchant for writing tuneful melodies, Poulenc has crafted a real masterpiece. It conveys what one might dare call the “impishness” of the gay mood of Paris and is considered the most beguiling piece in modern choral literature.
Preoccupied with the indulgences of good living, Rossini was to complain to his friends, while writing the Stabat Mater, “I am searching continually for melodic motives, and all that comes into my mind is pastries, truffles, and such things.” Nonetheless, the portly composer whose penchant for cooking and eating became legendary scored such a triumph with the premiere of his completed choral masterpiece in Paris that within a year more than thirty European cities had acclaimed performances of this infectiously tuneful setting of a medieval sacred poem.
The concert will also feature the Fauré's Pavane. Originally a piano piece, it is better known in Fauré's version for orchestra and chorus. Its rhythm stems from the slow processional Spanish court dance of the same name, the Pavane ebbs and flows from a series of harmonic and melodic climaxes, conjuring a cool, somewhat haunting, elegance.
These glorious works consistently rate as audience favorites throughout the world’s major cities. They are not performed in southern Connecticut often perhaps because they pose musical, orchestral and financial challenges that put them out of the reach of most choral groups. However, The Fairfield County Chorale and The Westchester Choral Society have joined forces to bring these stunning pieces to our audience at the 1000 seat Norwalk Concert Hall.
The Fairfield County Chorale’s acclaimed conductor David Rosenmeyer will conduct the concert. It will be accompanied by the 45 players of The Fairfield County Chorale Orchestra and will be joined by four superb soloists.
Audience favorites tenor Alok Kumar and bass Pnini Grubner return for this concert. They will be joined by soprano Enivia Mendoza, and mezzo soprano, Eve Gigliotti.
