Community Conversation: Exhibition of “Letter from Italy, 1944” Original Sources
The story of Dr. John K. Meneely, a WWII combat medic in the Army’s fabled 10th Mountain Division, who returned home suffering from what is now termed PTSD, inspired "Letter from Italy, 1944," a moving and powerful oratorio, composed and written by his daughters, Sarah Meneely-Kyder and Nancy Fitz-Hugh Meneely. In conjunction with its upcoming Hartford Premiere on May 4, an exhibit of Meneely Collection photos, letters, 10th Mountain Division artifacts, poetry and scores used in the oratorio’s creation will be on display at the Noah Webster Library, 20 South Main St. in West Hartford, from April 1 to May 30. "Misa A Buenos Aires" combines the rhythm and melodic design of tango with the ancient beauty of the Latin choral mass.
John Rutter’s long-awaited new major work, "The Gift of Life" is a six-movement choral celebration of the living earth, of creation, and of life itself, offering a kaleidoscope of moods from contemplative and prayerful to majestic and inspirational.

Community Conversation: A Three Lecture Series, “Transforming the Silence,” At President’s College, University of Hartford
TThe final lecture in this series, “Looking at PTSD,” will be presented by Dr. Jason DeViva, Clinical Psychologist with VA Connecticut Healthcare’s PTSD and Anxiety Disorders Program
Three informative lectures are part of a series of eight Community Conversations prior to the Hartford Premiere of "Letter from Italy, 1944," to be presented by the combined voices of GMChorale and Hartford Chorale, with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, at The Bushnell on May 4, 2017 (visit www.bushnell.org for tickets). Commissioned by GMChorale and composed and written by Sarah Meneely-Kyder and Nancy Fitz-Hugh Meneely, the oratorio is based on the true story of their father, Dr. John K. Meneely, a WWII combat medic in the Army’s fabled 10th Mountain Division, who returned from war suffering from what we now call PTSD.
The first lecture will feature the screening of the 2016 Emmy Award-winning documentary narrated by Meryl Streep, “Letter from Italy, 1944: A New American Oratorio,” which follows the creation and production of the moving and powerful oratorio, on Thursday, March 23. The screening will be followed by Conversation with Director and Filmmaker, Karyl Evans.
The second lecture will be a reading of the poetry that was set to music for the oratorio. Poet and librettist Nancy Meneely will present her poetry with slide projections and music on Thursday, March 30. Sarah Meneely-Kyder, "Letter from Italy" composer, joins her sister for Conversation with the audience.
The final lecture in this series, “Looking at PTSD,” will be presented by Dr. Jason DeViva, Clinical Psychologist with VA Connecticut Healthcare’s PTSD and Anxiety Disorders Program and Assistant Professor at the Yale School of Medicine, on Thursday, April 6.
All the lectures will take place at KF Room, Mortensen Library, University of Hartford, on Thursdays, March 23 & 30 and April 6, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. This series is open to the public; the cost for the series is $80 for the general public and $65 for Fellows. “Letter from Italy, 1944: A New American Oratorio,” featuring Lyme-resident and Grammy-nominated composer Sarah Meneely-Kyder
Lyme resident, Sarah Meneely-Kyder, a Grammy-nominated composer, will present a screening of “Letter from Italy, 1944: A New American Oratorio,” a one-hour documentary created by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Karyl Evans and narrated by Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, on Tuesday, April 18 at 12:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Old Lyme-Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library in Old Lyme. Following the screening, Ms. Meneely-Kyder will answer questions.
Ms. Meneely-Kyder, together with her sister Nancy Meneely, a noted poet, and in collaboration with Joseph D'Eugenio, artistic director of the Greater Middletown Chorale, wrote “Letter From Italy, 1944,” a compelling two-hour American musical drama based on their father’s wartime experiences, which he shared through his letters home to his family. The documentary takes viewers behind the scenes of the creation and staging of this original oratorio about Dr. John Meneely, who served as a World War II regimental surgeon with the elite 10th Mountain Division. During his wartime service, he was called upon to witness and provide aid in many difficult and painful situations.
While “Letter from Italy, 1944” focuses on the life of the Yale-trained doctor during and following World War II, the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder story that it details still resonates today.
