Bristol Choral Society

Musc Director: Open

The Bristol Choral Society was established in 1975. The Society is a 135-140 ensemble of talented community individuals who share their love of music in various community venues and as performing arts ambassadors in other countries. An important goal of the Bristol Choral Society is to present excellent performances of significant works and to enrich the social and cultural lives of its members and community. Uniquely, our programs are varied and all include classical and contemporary pieces. These balanced programs also include Broadway pieces, spirituals and folk pieces. All works are performed with original orchestrations, language and intent. Community performances are accompanied either by professional orchestra, chamber orchestra, Wind ensemble or the Bristol Reunion Jazz Band. We provide opportunities for youth to further their experience in music either through performance or financial scholarships. Because our concerts are always a sell-out, we share our joy of music by presenting all our concerts on Nutmeg TV for the communities surrounding Bristol. Additional information about our organization can be found on our website.

Cappella Cantorum

Simon Holt, Music Director

Cappella Cantorum is the premiere non-auditioned community choral group of the Connecticut Shoreline and lower Connecticut River Valley. The organization’s primary purpose is to give singers of all ages the opportunity to learn, perform and share great choral music with the wider community.

In addition to performing, the group promotes music education and appreciation through summer singing programs, vocal training workshops, an Annual Messiah Sing or Listen and other events open to the public. Established in 1970, Cappella Cantorum celebrated its 50th year of making great music in the 2019-2020 season.

Cappella Cantorum Masterworks Chorus offers major concerts in December and April, accompanied by the Cappella Orchestra and professional soloists. Rehearsals for these concerts typically begin in September and January, respectively. All singers are welcome to join, and no audition is required.

The SummerSings series was launched by Cappella Cantorum in 1987, and is now co-sponsored by Con Brio Choral Society. These sessions are offered periodically throughout the summer months when many choirs are not active. They provide singers with the opportunity to enjoy choral works without the pressure of preparing for a performance. All singers are welcome to participate, even if they are not members of Cappella or Con Brio.

Cappella Cantorum International Tour Chorus has traveled the world since 1981. Trips are usually scheduled every other year. The group has toured throughout Europe and Canada, combining sightseeing with concerts in local venues, including many famous cathedrals. All are welcome to travel and sing with the group, even if they are not regular members of Cappella or another chorus.

GMChorale

Joseph D'Eugenio, Artistic Director
Allan Conway, Accompanist

The GMChorale has become one of New England’s finest and most engaging choruses since its founding in 1977 as The Greater Middletown Chorale. Today, the GMChorale is celebrated for its innovative symphonic choral presentations, and often performs with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and other ensembles.

Under the inspired leadership of Joseph D’Eugenio, now in his twenty-first season as the ensemble’s Artistic Director, the 80-voice Chorale performs a wide range of choral repertoire, from beloved masterworks to newly commissioned pieces. GMChorale crowned its two European concert tours as the only choir providing music for the Sunday noon mass at Venice’s extraordinary Basilica San Marco. Under Maestro D’Eugenio’s leadership, the GMChorale has commissioned and premiered new choral works by leading composers.

As the GMChorale enters its fifth decade, the organization is broadening its mission and the scope of its offerings to bring the power and beauty of choral music to people and communities across Connecticut. Alchemy, the GMChorale’s new vocal chamber ensemble, established and directed by Joseph D’Eugenio as part of this broader mission, has already seen great success with concerts of early to contemporary music, both a cappella and accompanied, in a variety of settings across the state.

Greater New Haven Community Chorus

Alysoun Kegel, Artistic Director

The Greater New Haven Community Chorus is a non-auditioned, four part (SATB) chorus with a membership over 100 voices. Our singers have very diverse backgrounds—ranging from those who are highly skilled to those who have never sung in a chorus before. GNHCC provides a very welcoming and supportive atmosphere for everyone. A strong commitment to performance excellence is expected and there are opportunities for small ensemble work and solos by audition, including the auditioned GNHCC Chamber Choir. Participation each semester in a one day retreat is encouraged to help build choral skills and to provide an opportunity to socialize with other members of the chorus. Chorus members are also encouraged to share individual skills with the GNHCC to help fulfill its mission.

To join GNHCC, prospective members are invited to attend three rehearsals as guests before joining. This provides an opportunity for interested singers to meet the chorus and to see if GNHCC provides the atmosphere that they are looking for. The enrollment period for new members is the first three weeks of each semester. Singers who miss the enrollment period and wish to join mid-semester must speak directly with the Artistic Director.

Registration fees are $50.00 per person per semester ($75.00 for couple of same household). Fees are collected at the beginning of each semester and are non-refundable. Member registration fees must be paid within three weeks of the start of the semester and may be paid by cash, check, or PayPal.

Our season consists of 2 semesters, Fall and Spring. We perform two major concerts each year: a Winter Concert in December, and a Spring Concert in late May or early June. In addition, various ‘Preview Concerts’ and community performances are frequently scheduled prior to our major concerts.
Rehearsals

Rehearsals are held every Thursday evening from 7 to 9 at First Presbyterian Church, at 704 Whitney Avenue, New Haven. As part of the rehearsal process, an all-chorus retreat is held once each semester. Typically the retreat takes place on a Saturday—specific details are announced prior to the scheduled retreat.

Mendelssohn Choir of CT

Carole Ann Maxwell, D.S.M.
Founder & Artistic Director

Beth Palmer
Accompanist

The Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut (MCC) was founded in 1984 by alumni of the Fairfield University Chamber Singers who wished to continue their musical association with Dr. Carole Ann Maxwell. Under Dr. Maxwell’s leadership, the Choir has performed a wide range of repertoire in New England, New York, and many European capitals. The Choir’s renditions of the world’s greatest choral masterpieces have earned it a reputation as one of the leading vocal ensembles of the region. Its diverse programming reflects an extensive repertoire from all periods and genres – from classical to contemporary and from opera to theater, film, and pop. The MCC embraces a mission of developing and promoting the choral arts – a mission that begins with the training of its own members and reaches out to the entire community of Fairfield County.

The Choir’s repertory has included Bach’s Magnificat, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Meeresstille und gluckliche Fahrt, Schubert’s Miriam’s Siegesgesang, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Brahm’s Alto Rhapsody and Liebeslieder Waltzes, Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, Vaughan Williams’s Sea Symphony and Toward the Unknown Region, Honegger’s King David, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Citulli Carmina, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, and the Stabat Mater and the Armed Man Mass of Karl Jenkins. The MCC has performed Requiem settings by Mozart, Verdi, Faure, Durufle, and Rutter, as well as American songbook entries from Gershwin, Sondheim, and many others and film score chorales by John Williams and Patrick Doyle. Opera in concert has been a recurring feature, including performances of Verdi’s Aida, Bizet’s Carmen, and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.

Over the years, the MCC has been honored to present the world premieres of The Child in Us All and the Prologue from North and South, by Tony Award winner Charles Strouse, Stephen Schwartz’s Academy Award-winning song “When You Believe” from Prince of Egypt, and “Chief Seattle” by Gregg Smith. In celebration of its Silver Anniversary, the Choir commissioned a work by Randal Alan Bass, O Divine Music, which it premiered in May 2010. That same year MCC also introduced Connecticut composer Edward Thompson’s What the Ivy Said to the Fallen Snow. In 2014 the Choir premiered Child of War by Jin Hi Kim, a setting of texts by the Vietnamese peace activist Kim Phuc.

The Choir has performed regularly with the symphony orchestras of Bridgeport, Norwalk, Wallingford, and New Haven. The ensemble has appeared several times in Carnegie Hall under the auspices of both Distinguished Choirs International and Mid-America Productions. In addition to a memorable performance at the 2006 National Pastoral Musician’s Conference in Norwalk, the Choir has also sung to enthusiastic audiences in Rome, Florence, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Galway and Dublin.

Beyond its artistic achievements, the MCC plays an important civic role through its local outreach programs, notably its Mendelssingers ensemble. The Mendelssingers regularly perform in hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities and at various community events to bring the wonder and awe of live choral music to the broadest spectrum of the Connecticut public. The Choir receives support from the Connecticut Office of the Arts, the Carstenson Foundation, and many generous corporations, businesses and individuals throughout Fairfield County.

Since 1984, The Mystic River Chorale, an in-dependent, not-for-profit community chorus, has gathered talented people from eastern Connecticut to western Rhode Island to raise their voices in song.

Presenting a mixture of major choral masterworks with full orchestra and a wide variety of serious and lighter music for chorus alone, the Chorale's concerts speak to a broad spectrum of the community.

We are particularly proud of our ability to be accessible and welcoming to singers with a variety of backgrounds, while maintaining an extremely high standard of performance. New Britain Chorale

Adrian Mackiewicz, Artistic Director

The New Britain Chorale is a community choir under the auspices of NEWBRACC (New Britain Area Council of Churches). We have been in existence for over twenty years. We are a faith-based choral group that is open to those who wish to sing sacred music. No church affiliation, however, is needed to become a member or sing with us. We offer one concert each year free to the public. That concert is generally in March or April, with rehearsals beginning in early January. Some sectional rehearsal time is provided. For our concert, we wear choir robes from the various churches represented by our members. Robes are supplied for those not affiliated with a church choir. Each December, a group of members sing in a Christmas concert at Central Connecticut State University. Other singing opportunities are also available but vary each year.

Members are expected to pay for their music (usually $10-$15) and there is a $45 membership fee. (There is a price break for the second singer when two singers come from the same family.) We take a break during our rehearsal time for refreshment and social interaction. We value our time together, not only as singers but as friends.

The New Haven Oratorio Choir is a community based, mixed voice chamber ensemble. Daniela Sikora, Artistic Director

With a unique repertoire that ranges from Broadway to movie scores, from swing and Latin rhythms to contemporary gospel and spirituals, the Chorale delivers two major concerts a year and a holiday concert.

Through our Chorale connections, we channel our passion for singing to lift spirits and provide hope through song. As a not-for-profit vocal group, we are a community resource, performing at a variety of events throughout the year. West Hartford Women's Chorale

Dr. Ethan Nash, Music Director
Barbara Robbins, Accompanist

The West Hartford Women's Chorale (WHWC) is a non-audition ensemble of female singers who perform classical, jazz and popular choral music.

Its mission is to provide a fun, challenging opportunity for artistic growth regardless of prior vocal music training or experience, for all women who share the love of singing. WHWC seeks to provide continuing vocal music education in our community through performances and collaborations with other musical organizations. WHWC supports music education through contributions to an annual post high school scholarship for promising musicians.

Founded in 2004, the WHWC is led by a board president a volunteer board who assist the music director.

Membership for one year in the Chorale begins with open rehearsals for interested singers, held the first two rehearsals in Sept. and Jan. Rehearsals are Tuesdays, 7-8:30 PM at Temple Sinai, Newington.

WHWC performs winter and late spring concerts each year. In late winter we have hosted a Festival of Women's Voices, inviting a composer and other treble choirs from around the area. The chorale also performs for the community at events like the Wadsworth Atheneum's Festival of Trees in December.

A smaller ensemble, Camerata, is an auditioned choir meant to complement the performances of the chorale by presenting music suited to a smaller vocal ensemble. Membership in the main chorale is a requirement for all voices in Camerata.
