Community Conversation: Lecture – “Mental Health, the Media, and the U.S. Veteran: Historical Perspectives on PTSD/Military"

In conjunction with the upcoming Hartford Premiere of “Letter from Italy, 1944,” Dr. John H. Warner will present a lecture on the history of PTSD in the military.

The story of Dr. John K. Meneely, a WWII combat medic in the Army’s fabled 10th Mountain Division, who returned from war suffering from what we now call PTSD, inspired “Letter from Italy, 1944,” a moving and powerful oratorio. Commissioned by GMChorale and created by his daughters, composer Sarah Meneely-Kyder and librettist Nancy Fitz-Hugh Meneely, the oratorio was first performed in Middletown in 2013.

In conjunction with the upcoming Hartford Premiere of “Letter from Italy, 1944,” Dr. John H. Warner, Avalon Professor of the History of Medicine, Yale University, will present a lecture on the history of PTSD in the military. Since the earliest description of a group of symptoms termed “nostalgia” in soldiers in the 1600s, many names have been used to describe what we now call PTSD, e.g., battle shock, war strain, war neurosis, combat exhaustion, battle fatigue and shell shock. This lecture, free and open to the public, will take place on Thursday, March 2, at the Newington Public Library at 7 p.m.

This event is the second in a series of nine Community Conversations prior to the Hartford Premiere of “Letter from Italy, 1944,” to be presented by the combined voices of GMChorale and Hartford Chorale, with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, at The Bushnell on May 4, 2017.

David Rosenmeyer conducts the Fairfield County Chorale and the
New Haven Symphony Orchestra in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem on
Saturday, March 4th at 7:30pm in Norwalk Concert Hall, Norwalk, CT
Experience the power of Verdi's operatic masterpiece in an exciting collaboration
between the Fairfield County Chorale's 100+ voices, four talented soloists and the New
Haven Symphony Orchestra (William Boughton, music director). The Messa da
Requiem is one of the most popular and frequently performed large chorale works.
“We are thrilled to be performing with such a magnificent symphony. The Requiem
explores the full range of human emotions through its poetic language and music.
Moments of great intimacy, tenderness, love and loss are paired with vigorous rhythms,
sublime melodies and striking musical gestures. Our special collaboration with the New
Haven Symphony enhances and deepens the complex intensity of this important work,”
said FCC music director David Rosenmeyer.
Soloists to be featured are soprano Amanda Hall, mezzo-soprano Kirstin Chavez, tenor
Alex Richardson, and baritone Nathan Stark.
The Fairfield County Chorale is now in its 54th season of presenting great choral works
in southwestern Connecticut. Its mission is to perform a broad range of choral music for
the benefit of the community, and to champion the appreciation of excellence in choral
literature. The Chorale is comprised of over 100 voices, and every concert features a
professional orchestra and soloists. The FCC has presented a number of local, U.S.,
and world premieres, and has appeared at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New
York, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
The New Haven Symphony Orchestra, currently in its 123rd year, gave its first concert in
1895 and is the fourth oldest orchestra in the United States. Today, the Orchestra is
made up of over 70 professionals, most of whom live and work in the Greater New
Haven area. Maestro William Boughton currently directs the NHSO.
